22 Aug, 2013 Anti-Gay Law
The eighth United States Ambassador to Ukraine Geoffrey R. Pyatt reminded that the USA is against the laws on prohibition of so-called “gay propaganda” and also expressed his personal support for equality of the LGBT rights. “LGBT-rights are Human Rights” – underlined the Ambassador in his interview to “Radio Liberty”.
“First of all, I would like to say that it is fundamental principle for the USA that LGBT-rights are Human Rights. This is the policy which was promoted by the former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, which is supported by the current U.S. Secretary of State, John Kerry, and it is evidenced by the words of the President Barack Obama, and I am proud to support this policy as well”, – he declared.
Let us remind that earlier the President of USA Barack Obama sharply criticized law on prohibition of “propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations” adopted in Russia, noting that he feels intolerance towards “the countries, degrading gays, lesbians and transgender people.”
In relation to the similar Ukrainian bills Geoffrey R. Pyatt spoke in a similar way: “We strongly against any legislation that would protect anyone from the LGBT community. Finally, let me note that I’m interested to see how the Ukrainian government responds to these issues. I am also interested in some statements of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the steps that Ukraine will take to fulfill its obligations as a European country, to protect the rights of the LGBT community. But going back to the point which I began with: the rights of the LGBT community for the U.S. are the human rights.”
Earlier to prevent the adoption of laws on the “propaganda of homosexuality” Ukrainian government was recommended by the UN, EU, CoE, international human rights organizations ILGA и Human Rights Watch, and also the National Institute for Strategic Studies under the President of Ukraine.
